Important Health Notice
CockapoosTHIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! If you're the owner of a dog, please be VERY careful not to allow them to eat anything that contains the sugar substitute xylitol. Xylitol, a low-calorie sweetener that's on the rise in popularity, can be found in many HG-friendly sugar-free products like chewing gum, preserves and syrups. These products, and any others that contain xylitol, can be extremely harmful (even deadly) to your pet. Because this sweetener can be found in more and more diet products these days, cases of xylitol poisoning in dogs are on the rise and about 115 have been reported this year. Please PLEASE read labels and take extra care to keep your pup away from these items -- it could be a matter of life and death.

Rusty the Reading Dog
CockapoosRusty the Reading Dog

Grace Mueller submitted the following article about her dog Rusty, and the Reading Dog program going on in her school district.

"Our school district started a "reading dog" program. Some children have special problems learning to read and feel intimidated to read aloud in front of classmates who may be critical. These children, in groups of two or three, go to a specialized reading teacher’s room and read aloud to the teacher and a certified "reading dog" and its handler. Tests have proven that the children’s reading scores have improved!!! The dog is to sit or lay quietly while the child reads and may pet the dog. Of course the dog is a non- critical listener. Our cockapoo, Rusty, is a one year old reading dog. This is so rewarding for the children, but even more so for me. We are helping kids!!!!"

Thank you Grace Mueller for the wonderful article, and congratulations to Rusty the Reading Dog!

Cockapoo's and their Loving naturer by Martha
CockapoosMy dogs love to be cuddled and played with; they even like to be combed because they're close to me and being handled. They just love to be loved in any way. You should see my "little boy" stand on his back legs in the tub so I can wash his tummy. Since it has been cooler they've decided they really do want to be my "babies." I've posted a pictured on page 22 (I believe) of the gallery to show what I'm describing--in the picture I pretended to be asleep so I wouldn't know when it was being taken. In the evening when I sit in my rocker/recliner, the dogs both get in the chair with me. My "little girl" squeezes between my left leg and the arm of the chair. My "little boy" gets on my lap--sometimes he lays on his back with his head on my arm (like a child does when being rocked to sleep). Sometimes he lays on his side but usually on his back. I rock and pat just like I was rocking a young child. They'll go to sleep and stay in this position for an hour or more. They truly love people and have from the beginning; they are very good with kids which is important to me. I was thrilled to get such social puppies; I have had dogs that I had to socialize but these were already socialized.

Car sickness for Cockapoo's by Martha
CockapoosSome of you may have experienced car sickness with some of your dogs in the past. Most of my dogs--from my very first toy poodle back in 1970 through my current cockapoos--have experienced it at first for a few months (my daughter's dogs, which are also Sweet Pea dogs, have never been car sick). I have had medicine from the vet that worked on part of the dogs until they outgrew the car sickness. My poor little boy is approaching 2, and I still can't be sure he won't get sick. One of the things I do it to try to keep it a secret that we are leaving home until I take him out to get in the car--the excitement adds to his sickness. I also try to give him a little extra exercise so he will be more likely to lay down and sleep in the car. I drive a minivan and I have found out that if I have the middle seat out (would love stow-and-go for this), I can put his crate on the floor and he is more likely to lay down during the trip. This seems to be a key for him. I'm hoping that he has finally outgrown the tendency but we've only had a couple of trips where he didn't drool or get sick. (I'm talking about trips that take several hours of driving). I do think the roads or the number of stops also have an effect with him. I'm thinking the exercise and keeping him calm are the two important factors. If any of you who are reading this have other tips, I hope you will write about them.

Potty Training Bell Ringing
CockapoosJust a note to tell you how we trained this "bell ringer". We took him outside at regular times and out the same back door. I have a group of bells hanging on a cord tied to the door knob and each time that we took him out we tried to get him to ring the bells with his paws and if he didn’t we rang the bells... always saying the word, "outside" We always praised him when he did his job outside and a reward of a couple of Cheerios. Then one day last week we heard the bells and immediately took him outside and he has been quite consistent with ringing the bells ever since. I think we have had two accidents in the last three weeks. Our vet was quite impressed with that. I take him almost everywhere with me that I can... outside, shopping in the carrier, etc. He is kennel trained. He sleeps at night in a fairly small kennel and is pretty good about it. We only put him in the kennel at night and while we are gone somewhere where I can’t take him. He doesn’t prefer it, but he doesn’t object to it either. We have toys for him and he loves them and plays with them constantly. We always put the toys in the kennel with him. We always have chew bones for him and he has not chewed anything else. He is my dog and follows me all over all the time... which I love. He is one of the best dogs that we have had. Thanks again. Hope you have a great day! From Grace
